BNSF along Route 2 in Nebraska
Grand Trunk Western
Boston & Maine Steam
Weatherly Hill -- Lehigh Valley RR's Steepest Grade

FEATURES

  • Cover Story -
  • BNSF along Route 2 in Nebraska

A scenic tour of the BNSF's busy coal route running between Alliance and Grand Island, closely following Nebraska's Route 2 through the Nebraska Sandhills. This is a very interesting line from both a historical point of view and with the many hills and twists and turns the railroad makes as it dodges the hilly terrain for the hundreds of miles between the two cities.

  • Grand Trunk Western

The GTW has had a colorful existence as a subsidiary of the Canadian National Railway system. This article looks mainly at the GTW before its recent assimilation into the CN paint scheme and includes views both from its original main line and on the DT&I after its acquisition. Lots of steam and early diesels, along with a good assortment of the handsome medium blue and orange EMD's.

  • Boston & Maine Steam

A small selection of black & white photographs of steam locomotives on the Boston & Maine, including many buildings, structures, signs, bridges and period automobiles.

  • Weatherly Hill -- Lehigh Valley RR's Steepest Grade

Mike Bednar writes about the steepest grade on the Lehigh Valley Railroad -- at Weatherly, Pennsylvania, with a punishing 2.7% climb! Weatherly is on the Hazleton Branch in the middle of coal country and presented the LV with one of its worst operational headaches.
